It’s a Urijah Faber we’ve never seen before. The former WEC 145-pound king has always been more about touting his own game than talking about his opponent. But there’s something about Dominick Cruz that either drives him nuts or makes Faber think he can drive Cruz nuts. Faber’s been digging at the current UFC bantamweight champ for months and it continued at yesterday’s UFC 132 prefight press conference.
The history between the fighters dates back to 2007 when Faber (25-4) defeated a young Cruz (17-1) in a 145-pound bout at WEC 26. Cruz thought Faber rubbed it in after a quick victory via choke out. Faber doesn’t argue that (0:48 mark).
“I don’t think I was rubbing it in. I was kind of like ‘good fight … try again buddy.’ He knows what I meant. He was right,” said Faber.
Faber is enjoying the heat between the fighters.
“The reason it’s a grudge match and all that, is you put Dominick and I in the same little neighborhood, we probably would’ve ended up fighting each other. [Because] of his bad attitude and me not taking crap, and being the badder dude. And that’s what this all about. Like minded people, we’re going to butt heads when it comes to the fight game and see who’s boss,” Faber said.
Who’s looking for some fine grappling when Chris Leben and Wanderlei Silva lock horns? That’s what I thought. Two of the most prolific bangers in the history of MMA should provide some fireworks next week at UFC 132.
Silva has 23 knockouts in 33 wins while Leben has 13 in 25 victories. Silva says he’s on another level.
“I’m faster than him. Who’s gonna hit first? I don’t see him going past the first round,” said Silva (0:38 mark). “I’m going to hit him a couple of times and after that, he’s going to go out.”
This is a huge fight for Leben (25-7, 11-6 UFC), who allowed Brian Stann to use him as a stepping stone at UFC 125.
Dominick Cruz looks to avenge his only loss and protect his belt from Urijah Faber. Plus, Wanderlei Silva and Chris Leben meet in a slugfest for the ages. Watch UFC 132: Cruz vs Faber Live on Pay-Per-View or www.UFC.tv on Saturday, July 2nd at 6/9pm PT/ET.
The UFC heavyweight title fight between champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos is slated for Nov. 19, promotional chairman Lorenzo Fertitta told the LA Times on Thursday.
The report said Fertitta, on behalf of the UFC, is targeting that date and looking at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., as the location. Based on the schedule of potential events that have been reported, this would set up as UFC 139.
Should the fight commence Nov. 19, it would mean Velasquez’s layoff from his title-winning performance over Brock Lesnar will have lasted 13 months. Velasquez had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and his rehabilitation has been the reason for the long delay.
Dos Santos did not sit idly by waiting for his title shot. When the original fight with Velasquez had to be postponed due to the champion’s surgery, dos Santos took a spot as a coach on the 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter reality show, opposite Lesnar. When Lesnar had to pull out of their UFC 130 match with a recurrence of diverticulitis, former UFC interim heavyweight champ Shane Carwin stepped in. Dos Santos battered Carwin for three rounds to win a lopsided decision and regain the chance at Velasquez.
